Teaching aims

1. Students can learn the meaning and pronunciation of the words “eleven”, “twelve”, “thirteen”, “fourteen” and “fifteen” and use them in daily life.

2. Students can grasp the sentence structures: “How many____ do you see?/ I see fifteen.”.

3. Students will have a deeper impression on these words by focusing on the spelling rules of the numbers.

Teaching key and difficult points

Key point: words: “eleven”, “twelve”, “thirteen”, “fourteen” and “fifteen” and the sentence structure;

Difficult point: apply the sentence structures in daily life.

Teaching procedures

Step 1 Warming up and lead-in

Have students review the numbers by singing a song named Once I Caught a Fish Alive together with the students:

One, two, three, four, five,

Once I caught a fish alive,

Six, seven, eight, nine, ten,

Then I let it go again.

Why did you let it go?

Because it bit my finger so.

Which finger did it bite?

This little finger on my right.

Then lead in the topic by telling them we will learn more numbers in this lesson.

Step 2 Presentation

1. Present the words and teach.

Tell the students we will count and do math problems together. They need to match the flowers with the vases. After they figure out the answers, introduce the numbers in English and read for them.

After they get the meaning and pronunciation of the numbers, guide them to focus on the spelling and find out the rule: “thirteen”, “fourteen” and “fifteen” share the same part “teen”.

2. Present the sentence.

Play the tape. And ask students to find out the answer of the question “How many fish do you see?”. The answer is “I see fifteen.”.

Step 3 Practice

1. Math Quiz

Students need to compete with each other about their counting ability. They need to give the right answers in English. The equations are:

a. 8+5=?

b. 7+5=?

c. 10+5=?

2. Look and Count

Show them pictures of different things.

Ask them to work in pairs to describe the picture using the sentence structures.

–How many ____ do you see?

–I see fifteen.

Step 4 Production

Divide students into groups of four to do a survey. They need to count and list the numbers of their stationary in English. Then invite some group members to make a report.

Step 5 Summary and homework

Summary: the teacher summarizes the class.

Homework: ask students to learn the song Once I Caught a Fish Alive. But they need to change the numbers into those we learned today in the song and sing it in the next class.
