Teaching procedures:

Step 1: Warming-up

1. Greetings.

2. Sing a song called How Do You Get to School? The song goes like this:

How do you get to school?

How do you get to school?

How do you get to school?

How do you get to school?

I go by bus

I go by car

I go by train

It’s not too far

I go by coach

I go by boat

Then I ride a bike to school

3. Ask students one question: “What is the song about?” and lead in today’s topic.

Step 2: Pre-listening

1. Show students some new words, such as “helmet”, “must”, and “traffic light” by drawing stick figures and consulting the dictionary.

2. Show the pictures in the textbook on the screen. And let students predict what the listening material will talk about.

Step 3: While-listening

1. Extensive listening

Play the tape for students. Let them find out the main idea of the listening material and check their predictions. After listening, some students will be invited to share their ideas, and the teacher will give them proper praise.

2. Intensive listening

Play the tape again and find out the sentence structures, then answer two more questions:

Q1: How does Wu Yifan go to the Fuxing Hospital?

Q2: What do you learn about riding a bike from the dialogue?

Then check the answers.

3. Imitation

Listen to the tape for the third time and imitate the pronunciation and intonation.

Step 4: Post-listening

Show some signs on the screen. And four students in a group to have a discussion about: “What do these signs mean?” and “Where can you see them?”. They have to give their answers by using the sentence patterns learned today. 5 minutes later, some of them will be invited to share their ideas, and their pronunciation mistakes will be corrected properly.

Step 5: Summary and Homework

Summary: make a brief summary with the whole class and emphasize the importance of obeying the traffic rules.

Homework: search for more western traffic rules on the Internet and design a poster accordingly.
