Teaching key & difficult Points

The pronunciation of the letters “sh” and “ch”.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1: Warming up

1. Daily greeting

2. Free talk

Guide students to have a free talk about what they eat for lunch. Summarize some of the answers. And then use the words like “lunch”, “sandwich” and “milkshake” to introduce the topic of the pronunciation of the group of letters “sh” and “ch”.

Step 2: Presentation

1. Draw and guess

Draw some pictures on the blackboard. Ask students what they can see and what they know about them. Students need to observe and answer what they can see. During the process, lead students to read the words to get familiar with the pronunciations.

2. Observe and think

Ask students to look at the words carefully on the blackboard. They need to find the similarities in these words. And guide them to think of the pronunciation of the letter groups “sh” and “ch”. Students may look at the mouth of the teacher and try to pronounce correctly. Tell them that when they see “ch”, they should pronounce [tʃ], and when they see “sh”, they should pronounce [ʃ].

Step 3: Practic

1. Train and Villagers

Divide students into two groups. Group one needs to play a “train” and move around the class. They should say “chu, chu”. Group two should play villagers and say “shi, shi” when they hear the noise. Then they need to change the roles and play the game all over again.

2. Touch the Wall

Divide the class into the Red team and the Blue Team. The teacher will say some words either with the “ch” sound or the “sh” sound. The group members will touch the left wall if they hear the “ch” sound, and the right wall the “sh” sound. Whoever touches the wall first will get one star.

Step 4: Production

1. Make sentences

Ask students to make sentences based on what “our friends” eat for lunch. For example, “Cherry eats achicken for lunch”, “Sheep eats cheese for lunch,” “Fish eats cherry for lunch.”

2. Think and chant

Students need to think of other words that have the “ch” or “sh” sound. Then list the words on the blackboard. After it, use the words to make a chant. Students need to clap their hands and chant together. It is just like “Charles eats a milkshake. Charles is on a ship. A shark eats Charles.”

Step 5: Summary & Homework

Summary: briefly summarize the class.

Homework: give every one of the students a paper. On it there is a “sh” or “ch” sound word. Students can draw some food on the back of the paper.
